Introducing Panoptes, Wildlife Trade Intelligence at Scale

After a decade of working on the reptile and amphibian trade, I kept hitting the same wall. A simple question like “What is being offered for this species today, and at what price?” should take an afternoon. But often it took days of searching across dozens of sites in multiple languages, results already outdated by the time you were done.

That gap is why I built Panoptes.

Developed by Wildview Analytics, Panoptes is a wildlife trade intelligence system that monitors public marketplaces, classified-ad platforms, government feeds, enforcement events and scientific literature.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝
– 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬: Listings sit across separate sites with no shared format. Panoptes aggregates them into a single place.
– 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠 & 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐬: Sellers rarely use strict scientific names. They use common names, regional terms, and colour-morph labels.

Our pipeline structures everything into a clean, uniform shape: species, quantity, price, platform, country, and seller type.

𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐚 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐩. Collecting data is easy these days, turning it into meaningful intelligence is not. Knowing that a “conda” is a colour morph of Heterodon nasicus and not an anaconda. Or that a “leopard” in the tortoise section is Stigmochelys pardalis and not an actual leopard. That’s why every single record goes through an analyst review queue before entering the dataset. The continuously growing list of trade terminology means the system gets better over time.
